Geology of Fontaines d’Escot

Characteristics of Fontaines d’Escot

Fontaines d’Escot is situated on a rare deep vertical Jurassic strata (see diagram above).

A geological fault line has formed between the two different (Jurassic and Cretaceous) rock types thus allowing the water previously used by our ancient thermal station to surface.

Fault line

A group of speleologists - scuba divers has had the chance to explore the fault near Fontaines d’Escot!

They have discoved a succession of caves of all sizes that they named "Apons".

The following videos show their incredible journey inside the fault.

Transpyrenean Geological Route

Geologically speaking the whole Aspe valley and the Pyrenees are very interesting and are well documented through the «Transpyrenean Geological Route.».

Many information signs explain the geology of the Pyrenees in key locations, including the Fontaines d’Escot picnic area, just across the national road.

GeolVal

The association GeolVal regularly organises day trips to discover the geological wonders of the Pyrenees with the tourist office of Bedous.

These day trips are great if you like geology or if you would like to understand more about the Pyrenees!
